Palm Oil Benefits
By W. L. Yap
Palm oil is a natural raw material which can be used almost anywhere and is thus one of the most popular agricultural commodities. The versatile oil has been used from washing liquids and soap to margarine and cosmetics production. Almost every consumables product contains palm oil. In the European countries, the crude palm is also a primary substitute for rapeseed oil.

Palm Oil For Bio-diesel In Europe, there is a high demand on crude palm oil for bio-diesel purposes. Many major producers are investing heavily in the refineries needed for the process to convert crude palm into bio-diesel. Due to the current high prices of fossil crude oil, bio-diesel is deemed as the alternative fuel source to gasoline for vehicles.
Edible Oil For Food Production Palm oil is an important and versatile raw material for both food and non-food industries. It contributes to the economic development of the producing countries and to the diets of millions of people around the world. The oil is approximately 50% saturated fat and 50% unsaturated fat. Due to such a unique characteristic palm oil may be separated under controlled thermal conditions into two components, a solid form (palm stearin) and a liquid form (palm olein). Palm oil is often used in healthy organic foods since the only other solid organic fats are highly saturated butter and coconut oil.
Crude Palm Oil Production Due to its natural form, palm oil is entirely Genetic Modified (GM) free and has the highest yield per hectare than any other nature oil. This is recognized as a key benefit due to environmental pressures on its expansion to eco-sensitive areas. Plantation land areas are widely located in tropical region of Asia, Africa and South America. The largest producers are Malaysia and Indonesia with a combined output of around 90 percent of the world trade. Malaysia claims that in 1995 it was the world's largest producer with 51% of world production.
In summary, palm oil and its fractions are practical and attractive choice for importers and food manufacturers especially in third 3rd world countries. This is due to its price competitiveness, year round supply, diversity and versatility for edible and non-edible applications.

Workout in a Pill?

Pill or no pill, they’re still working out…
As you probably already know, we here at MDA are all about making informed decisions that produce the best results with a minimal amount of effort. For example, what’s the point in running yourself to death when you can achieve better results with a short and intense workout session? In this sense we are all for shortcuts. We love ‘em. Why take the long, circuitous path from A to B when you can get there by walking (or sprinting!) a straight line? But we normally discount the effectiveness of pharmaceutical shortcuts. Why? Shortcuts that involve pills usually never work - especially in achieving long term health or fitness goals. Pharma attempts at wellness almost always have a tough time seeing the forest for the trees. Gene expression is much more nuanced enterprise than a pill can account for. In other words, when it comes to popping a pill it is difficult to know what is going on behind the curtain. So when we read about a new pill being developed that chemically mimics the effects of exercise in lab mice, you can imagine how skeptical we were.
A team of scientists from the Salk Institute’s Gene Expression Laboratory has created a pill that they promise to be the shortest, simplest route to fitness. Untrained, sedentary mice were given the drug for four weeks and saw huge gains in endurance and weight loss. Compared to untrained, sedentary mice not given the drug, the pill poppers ran 44 percent longer on a treadmill – almost as if they had been exercising all their lives. Even for avowed adherents to the Primal Blueprint like us, a quick-fix exercise pill is mighty tempting. But wouldn’t that go against our commitment to better living through lifestyle changes, as opposed to chemistry?
Looking at our philosophy more in depth, you’ll realize that we’re not against the healing power of modern medicine if it addresses health problems that cannot be solved by lifestyle changes. Also, we’re not skeptical of pills simply because they are unnatural and man-made; we follow the Primal Blueprint because it appears to be the most effective way to achieve lasting health, fitness, and longevity. It’s more a matter of utility than dogma. The Primal Blueprint works, so we follow it. Pretty simple, right? All skepticism aside, if this exercise pill were to actually deliver on its promises without ill effects, we’d be all over it like mice on cheese (sorry about that).
We have to admit that the potential for such a drug to exist raises many questions. If modern science created a pill that provided all the benefits of living Primally, would you take it? If you could eat junk food and never work out, but still live a long and healthy life, would you? When it comes to longevity, when does the end trump the means? Every time?
Whatever your answers to these thought experiments are you have some waiting to do before reality catches up to the imaginary. As it stands, the pill appears to just be a boon for potential rodent marathon runners. The mice showed definite improvement in slow-twitch muscle fibers (oh boy, our favorite!), but there was no mention of strength or speed increases (of far more interest to Grok and his ilk). Of course, a mouse’s raw power and maximum foot speed probably aren’t the easiest things to test. And seeing as the traditional metric of fitness is still aerobic endurance, it’s safe to assume the scientists at Salk Institute weren’t overly concerned with recording anaerobic performance.
We’re willing to give the exercise pill a chance in theory, but until they teach mice to do Tabatta burpees and clean-and-jerks and measure the results (cats worldwide hope they’re inconclusive), or they start testing on humans, we’ll hold strong to our skepticism of Big Pharma and wait to see how things pan out. In the meantime it is good fodder for philosophical questions about what it means to live a healthy life. Hit us up with your thoughts!

Holistic Medicine
By Kay Hutchinson
When it comes to acute conditions such as broken bones, raging infections, stroke, heart attack, or trauma injury, traditional western medicine has a great advantage over holistic medicine in terms of addressing the conditions quickly, thoroughly and in ways that are just not possible with natural approaches to health.

Photo: pawspot.com
Traditional western medicine also has a myriad of sophisticated diagnostic tools ranging from blood work to digital mammograms that can help detect and prevent disease in ways that are not available with holistic methods.
Yet, when it comes to chronic conditions, illnesses that linger in the body, holistic approaches often offer a more effective opportunity to balance root issues that cause disease.
Holistic techniques often involve the use of herbal medicine, aromatherapy and various bodywork therapies ranging from acupuncture, dietary changes, healing exercise, acupressure, medical qi gong, massage and chiropractic adjustments.
Many people who partake of holistic methods may find that they are able to work with their medical doctors to lower dosages or eliminate pharmaceutical medications as their health improves.
However, there are also cautions about holistic approaches. Some practitioners advocate the use of mega-dosages of certain supplements, colonics and parasitic cleanses, and strong detoxifying herbs. While these approaches can be helpful, they are not appropriate for all people, especially for individuals with fragile systems.
Also people, without formal training, may take it upon themselves to try to self-treat or suggest holistic remedies to friends or family members with no knowledge of how such remedies might impact the body other than what they've read in books. They think, "Well, it's all natural so what could it hurt to try this or that?"
Natural does not always mean safe.
For example, one client listened to a relative's advice to engage in colonic and parasitic cleanses that contained high levels of magnesium and potassium and cooling herbs. Yet, this client had weak kidneys and other health issues that made these therapies contraindicated.
The result? She is now on dialysis twice a week because such natural approaches permanently damaged her kidneys.
The best way to partake of holistic care is to work with a certified or licensed professional who has experience with assessing which natural remedies are most appropriate for your specific body and health challenges.
Such professionals are trained to consider all the factors impacting health to optimize healing in a balanced way with various natural healing protocols.
In addition to developing balanced protocols, some practitioners like myself emphasize a complementary and integrative approach instead of alternative approach. Thus, integrative holistic practitioners support the work of western medical professionals by using herbs and acupressure to enhance western based therapies so that clients get the best of both worlds.
For clients who wish to go the all-natural route, an integrative practitioner will explore if that is most beneficial on an individual basis instead of taking the position that natural is always better.
In contrast, an alternative practitioner will tend to emphasize that natural is the best way and rarely will recommend integrating western medical strategies, although responsible alternative practitioners will also acknowledge the limitations of their scope of practice and make referrals to medical physicians when appropriate.
